Go With the FLOW (Family Literacy Opportunity Workshops) Session VI

Go With the FLOW (Family Literacy Opportunity Workshops) Session VI

Session VI too was focused on non-fiction, with the five non-fiction text structures demonstrated.  Each teacher, and Ms. Schwebel as well, wore a head piece with the name of a different text structure, including sequence, descriptive, cause and effect, compare and contrast and problem/solution.  Families were introduced to the different graphic organizers that were useful to use with each text structure. Finally a matching game was played, with text structures and their definitions.

Reading Night June 8, 2011

Another successful Reading Night, this one for kindergarten through second grade, was held at
99 Washington Street on Wednesday, June 8th. The theme was Animals, and there was a Safari
room, an Ocean room, a Pet room and a Farm room. Volunteers dressed in animal costumes,
read books related to their animals and entertained students and parents alike. Stuffed animals
were raffled off as prizes, and every student received a book related to animals. Once again,
EOCCS staff showed their devotion to their calling by volunteering time, and families showed
their appreciation by attending and enjoying!

Go With the FLOW (Family Literacy Opportunity Workshops) Session II

During session II, all four teachers ( Ms. A. Williams, S. Marquez, S. Craig and C. Varady) met with their “classes” of parents/caregivers and their children.  They modeled reading strategies, including rereading, reading ahead, visualization, prediction, connections and inference.  The attendees practiced with the books they received for the lesson, and then the students shared some of the strategies they had learned. Interactive notebooks were given to the students and their parents/guardians.  These were used for storing the strategy flipbooks and other materials they were given and  for responding to the reading.

Go With the FLOW (Family Literacy Opportunity Workshops) Session I
During session I of these interactive school/family collaborative workshops,  Ms. Schwebel introduced the program to the families, discussed the components of literacy,  introduced the term “metacognition” and talked about reading strategies.  Ms. Schwebel modeled the strategy of visualization, after which the attendees drew their own visualizations in response to the book “Owl Moon” by Jane Yolen.  Additionally, Ms. Williams and Ms. Schwebel modeled paired reading, followed by the parents/caregivers and their children practicing reading together and then performing their poems from I’ll Read to You, You Read to Me.
