Go With the FLOW (Family Literacy Opportunity Workshops) Session VI
Session VI too was focused on non-fiction, with the five non-fiction text structures demonstrated. Each teacher, and Ms. Schwebel as well, wore a head piece with the name of a different text structure, including sequence, descriptive, cause and effect, compare and contrast and problem/solution. Families were introduced to the different graphic organizers that were useful to use with each text structure. Finally a matching game was played, with text structures and their definitions.

Go With the FLOW (Family Literacy Opportunity Workshops) Session II
During session II, all teachers met with their “classes” of parents/caregivers and their children. They modeled reading strategies, including rereading, reading ahead, visualization, prediction, connections and inference. The attendees practiced with the books they received for the lesson, and then the students shared some of the strategies they had learned. Interactive notebooks were given to the students and their parents/guardians. These were used for storing the strategy flipbooks and other materials they were given and for responding to the reading.
